Galaxy Coral - Galaxea sp.

GalaxyCoral.jpg

Although beautiful, the ever-popular and frequently available Galaxy Coral can be difficult to maintain and is not recommended for those new to the hobby. Actinic lighting will help bring out their color. While they're can do well under the right conditions, Galaxea should not be considered by apprehensive hobbyists. These corals have very sharp skeletons covered in extremely thin tissue, which is inevitably scuffed up by collection and shipping, so "perfect looking" non-expanded specimens are virtually non-existent. Once expand they look great, but the unexpanded skeletons will look a little scruffy to those unaccustomed to handling these corals. There are many other corals that travel better, although Galaxea isn't as bad as we're intentionally making it sound. Galaxea should be given plenty of room to expand, and then some, because they have sweeper tentacles that extend several inches at night that can sting other corals. Acclimates best in low current and low to medium lighting. Do not place directly under intense lighting or expose to high water flow. If you've read this far, you might give these beautiful corals a try!

Flag Finned Angel - Apolemichthys trimaculatus

Apolichthys_trimaculatus_adult.jpg

This species can be one of the more challenging angels in the home aquarium, but it's not as difficult than the top selling Red Sea Regal Angel. This fish is best attempted only in an aquarium containing live rock. In a bare "fish tank" with nothing to graze on, this fish will have a tough time adapting, but in reefs or with live rock they generally fare notably better. Typically quite shy when first introduced into the aquarium, they should be provided plenty of hiding places, ideally consisting of rockwork with lots of caves. Keep only with other peaceful fishes and do not house with bold species of angels.

Juveniles have a black spot on their sides.
